How to Bleed a Radiator (and When You Must Not)

A radiator that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top has air trapped in it, and bleeding takes about five minutes per radiator with a key that costs a few dollars. But first you have to know which kind of radiator you own: hot-water radiators get bled, steam radiators never do. Identify your system before touching any valve

One pipe, with a small metal vent shaped like a dome or cylinder partway down one side, means steam β and steam radiators are never bled. With the system off and cold, unscrew the vent counter-clockwise with a small wrench, soak it in hot white vinegar for about thirty minutes to dissolve the rust and scale inside, rinse it under cold water for a minute, then blow through it. If air passes freely, wrap the threads with PTFE tape and refit it with the opening pointing up. A steam radiator also needs to sit with a slight pitch back toward its pipe so condensate drains away. If yours is level or tipped the wrong way it will bang, and shimming the far legs fixes more knocking than any vent will. Uneven heat across several rooms is worth reading alongside balancing uneven room temperatures.
Run the heat, then shut it down and let it settle
Turn the heating on and let it run fifteen to twenty minutes, then walk the house with a hand low and high on each radiator and note which ones have a cold band across the top. Those are the ones with air in them. Now switch the system off at the thermostat and let it cool until the radiators are comfortable to rest a hand on. Bleeding a hot, pressurized system sprays near-boiling water, and the circulating pump keeps pushing air back around the loop so you never actually clear it.

Make a quick list as you go β room, and whether the cold band is at the very top or halfway down. A radiator cold from top to bottom has a circulation problem, not an air problem, and bleeding it will do nothing. Start instead with troubleshooting a heating system that will not start.
Match the key to the valve before you turn anything
The bleed valve sits at one top corner of the radiator, opposite the supply pipe, and takes a small clover or square key β most commonly a 1/4-inch square spindle. Some valves are cut for a flat-head screwdriver and a few take a hex key. Work in order: lowest floor first, then upward
Air rises, so it collects in the highest radiators in the house. Starting on the lowest floor and working up pushes the air ahead of you toward the last and highest radiator, where it finally leaves the system. Within a single floor, start with the radiator furthest from the boiler. Doing all of them in one pass matters more than the exact route β bleeding one radiator here and another next week just lets air redistribute between them.

Sources disagree on whether to start nearest the boiler or furthest from it, and on a small system it makes little practical difference. What consistently does matter is going lowest to highest and finishing the whole house in one session.
Open the valve a quarter turn and listen for the hiss
Hold the cloth under the valve with the cup beneath it, fit the key, and turn counter-clockwise no more than a quarter to a half turn. You should hear a steady hiss as air escapes. That is the whole mechanism β you are letting the trapped pocket out, not draining the radiator. Never open the valve fully or remove it; the spindle can come out under pressure and you will have no quick way to stop the water.

Keep your face away from the valve opening. Even on a cooled system the first water out can be hot enough to scald.
Close it at the first steady trickle of water
The hiss will sputter, then turn into a steady dribble of water with no more air behind it. That is the signal to close β turn the key clockwise until it is snug, and no further. Overtightening crushes the seat inside and starts a weep you will have to fix later. Wipe the valve and the paint below it dry, because water left sitting on a radiator will lift the finish and start rust.

If the water comes out dark, rusty, or sludgy rather than clear, the system has corrosion in it. That is worth raising with a heating technician at the next service rather than ignoring β it is the same debris that eventually blocks valves and the pump.
Check the boiler pressure and top it back up
Every radiator you bleed takes a little water out of the system, so the boiler pressure drops. Find the pressure gauge on or near the boiler and read it cold: most residential hydronic systems want roughly 12 psi cold, but the boiler's own label or manual is the number that counts. If it has fallen below that, use the fill valve to add water slowly in small increments, watching the gauge. Check the pressure after every few radiators on a larger house rather than waiting until the end.

Add water in small steps and stop as soon as you reach the target. Overfilling forces water out through the pressure-relief valve and can waterlog the expansion tank.
Run the heat again and recheck every radiator
Turn the system back on and give it twenty minutes, then feel each radiator top and bottom again. They should now warm evenly from end to end. Any that still has a cold band has more air in it and can take a second short bleed. If a radiator that you successfully bled is cold again within a few weeks, stop repeating the fix and look for the cause β a small leak, a failing expansion tank, or an auto-fill valve feeding fresh oxygenated water into the loop.
